Lawn Maintenance Safety Tips

For those of us with outdoor spaces to maintain, summertime means an increased awareness of just how fast grass and other foliage can grow! The summer weather often leads to planning to keep our yards tidy by hedge clipping, grass cutting, and weed eating. All those activities are a great way to enjoy sunshine while being productive and setting yourself up to end the day in a nice outdoor space. But while the work pays off it’s important to take steps to ensure your plans aren’t foiled by avoidable injuries! Here are 7 things you can do to help avoid injuries while doing yardwork!

  1. Pick up hard debris throughout the yard before mowing so that nothing too big or sharp gets kicked out from the lawnmower. Even better, try to make sure there are no people or animals in the area that could be at risk of debris injuries.
  2. Wear sunglasses, ear protection, long pants and closed toe shoes to protect your eyes, ears, legs and feet during mowing.
  3. Wear gloves to prevent blisters and skin rashes.
  4. Immediately turn off the mower if something seems wrong, before investigating.
  5. Make sure hedge trimmers and weed eaters are in good working order. Appropriately sharp tools will help avoid muscle strain.
  6. Be on the lookout for and take steps to combat common bugs and plants that can pose problems, like fire ants, ground hornets, and poison ivy.
  7. Wear sunscreen!
