When is the Best Time to Get a Flu Shot?

You might think it’s too early to start thinking about protecting your family from the flu, but it’s not! As the weather cools off, it’s time for you to Own Your Health by taking steps to keep the flu at bay! The CDC has a lot to say about why we should get a flu shot, but just as important as getting the flu shot is making sure to get it at the right time! Here are a few things to consider when planning you and your families flu shots:

  • Flu shots are recommended annually, even if the vaccine composition hasn’t changed, because over time your body’s immunity to types and subtypes of the flu will decline. Even if you develop antibodies through natural infection (getting the flu) those antibodies will decrease in immunity levels over time.
  • The flu vaccine takes about two weeks to develop the antibodies that protect against the flu, which is why the CDC recommends getting the vaccine sooner than when the flu begins to spread throughout the community.
  • Some children that have never had a flu shot need two doses. The CDC recommends that both doses (which need to be at least 4 weeks apart) be received by the end of October.
  • Since it takes time to protect you, it’s better to get the flu shot earlier in the season when you are less likely to be exposed while the antibodies are still developing
